Vacherie

012.JPG

In the heart of Creole Louisiana lies a small French speaking community called Vacherie. It is home to historic plantation sites where sugar, cotton, soybeans, rice and tobacco were once produced. Some fruits and vegetables are still farmed here. The name itself refers to "the cow pasture", an area of high ground on the west bank of the Mississippi River once known for cattle farming. Bound on the south by rich swamps, wild game and seafood are plentiful and contribute to the reputation of the region for delicious recipes handed down from the downriver Germans and the upriver Acadians.

UPSTAIRS LOUNGE FIRE

fire 003.JPG

It was around 7 p.m. on the night of the fire when Mike Scarborough, drinking at the Upstairs, went into the men's room. He became annoyed at a man in the next stall; there was a hole in the partition, and the man was ogling and harassing whoever was on the other side. This had been going on for hours. Scarborough complained to the bartender, who went into the bathroom to roust the troublemaker: a down-on-his -luck hustler named Rodger Nunez.

FLO BOYD

gulf 034.JPG

One of the best things about Fernwood Country Club was watching Flo Boyd teaching children how to swim. She hovered in the water, arms outstretched, and coaxed them to jump in. She taught faith, confidence, friendship and team spirit. These were lessons those children carried with them for the rest of their lives. And so did Flo- she remains unsinkable to this day..

CHURCH HILL

004.JPG

Church Hill is located between Fayette, Mississippi and Natchez. It's the oldest church in Mississippi and it will take your breath away when you come to the crossroads and see it crowning a hill. I have taken many friends and family members to see its magnificence for themselves. My wife and I picnicked there, photographing it for a Christmas card. My friend, Haleem Solomon (shown in the photograph) and I went there on one of our many pilgrimages before he died. My favorite trip to the church was with my daughter, Rebecca.

LANCE ALWORTH

lance 001.JPG

It's football season all over America, the NFL lockout is over, the stadiums are filled to capacity, and my adrenaline is pumping. Of course, I am re-telling stories of my glory days when my teammate was the best in the business...yes, I played football with the great Lance Alworth, Wide Receiver for the Dallas Cowboys and the San Diego Chargers. We played in front of the Brookhaven train depot when we were twelve years old, dug cinders out of our bleeding knees, and drew a crowd every Sunday afternoon. I had visions of NFL stardom for myself. Lance went on to the NFL Hall of Fame.

EVERLASTING ARMS

ej 009.JPG

When I was a child, my uncle's tender arms were reassuring. I would sit in his lap and feel his strong heart beating against my back. At the age of six he found me in a hospital charity ward recovering from a tonsilectomy. Without a word he scooped me up in his arms and carried me to a private room that he had arranged.
As I grew older it was his strong arms that rescued me from a tractor accident, saving my life.
